EDIT: uploaded a scan. quality is trippled from the old file. :)

It's Link from the Legend of Zelda. Whoot!

Actually, it's from Ingie's fanfiction, Fortitude, Chapter XVI . You should go read it!

Actually the main purpose of doing this was to try out the whole bunch of new supplies and techniques I got over break before my important BIG project. It's a birthday present. :) This was very helpful.

acryllic paints
11x14 canvas
4+ hours sketch to finish

The passage it was taken from says:

"Link moved steadily onward, not even flinching at the sharp rocks that cut into his skin. He never even paused to catch his breath.

After leaving the tunnel, he came upon what I saw to be a very steep cliff to a very wide and deep canyon. A rush of fear swept over me as I looked down. One slip and he would surely fall to his death.

But Link never even hesitated. Instead he hurriedly climbed up toward the topmost ledge, using small cracks and protrusions in the rock to steadily pull himself up. Once he had reached the top, he hoisted himself up onto flat land and immediately resumed his previous running.

His stamina was inhuman, but then again it wasn't his stamina that propelled him onward. It was the power of the Triforce. It had freed him from imprisonment, and now it guided him on toward, what exactly?

On and on Link ran, never faltering, never showing any sign of weariness, until finally the rocky canyon was far behind him, and he was running through the dry sand of the Haunted Wasteland. He had made his way up a rather steep hill of sand and down the other side when the suddenly glow of his Triforce piece dimmed and its power abruptly left him. His unnaturally bright green irises faded back to their regular blue and immediately his shoulders hunched forward with exhaustion."

He had just escaped from prison, breaking off the shackles (as seen here) that had bound him to an alter. This is just before the power of the triforce leaves him and he collapses.

Oh, wow, you painted it! :excited: And it looks awesome! Link is painted very well, especially considering you used traditional paints. I see you remembered the shackles and the blood... I also love the background- you captured the Haunted Wasteland perfectly with the flag and the wind... very nice detail. :)

There are two teensy things in the pic that I feel the need to point out (and I really hope you don't take this the wrong way...): I know it's like second nature to give Link his hat when drawing him, but he doesn't have it anymore in Fortitude. He hasn't had it for years, actually. Also, Link's scar should be a little higher than where it is- it's actually a diagonal cut located directly over his heart.

But really, besides those two things, you captured the scene awesomely, and I really appreciate you participating in the contest. Thank you so much! Hooray for the first entry! :w00t:

Yey! You like it! I'm so glad! And thank you for your compliments. That means a lot, coming from you! I think if I worked on a larger scale than what I did, then it would be a lot better, but the small canvas is all I had. It's 11x14. There are aspects of it that were better in the sketch (like the legs and feet) but other than that I'm happy with it too. (did you notice how the sand drops off in the upper left hand corner? that's the cliff!)

The sand storm was fun to do! I had never splattered thinned acryllic paint before. The big project I'm working on is a snow scene, so I'm glad this was in the wasteland so I could practice. Lesson Learned: splattering paint gets EVERYWHERE. Never do it inside your tiny dorm room (where it then gets all over the walls, floor, and doors and you have to scrape it all off with a wood chisel.)

Haha, I originally just painted it for practice. Entering it into the contest was like "oh yeah, might as well" but I knew it wouldn't be accurate all the way. I'm surprised you didn't notice the difference in his pupils! That's the one detail I knew I did differently, because I couldn't get the image of his whole eyes being that glowing lime green (like feirce diety's white or TP Dark Link's red).

Thanks Ingie!

Wow, you painted an entire human figure on a 11x14?? Dang, girl, that's some feat! :omfg: And oh, yeah, the cliff, I see! :D Awesome!

Lol, oh wow, such efforts you went through to make the pic! :giggle: Sounds like you learned the hard way! ^^ The sand particles look great though! :giggle:

Oh, okay, that's good then. I figured it might have been something like that, since you mentioned it was a kind of experiment/practice. :) Heh, actually I did notice the eyes, but I didn't say anything because I had already nitpicked enough and I figured it was just too difficult to get that effect with traditional paints (I didn't know how large the canvas was).

No prob, thank *you* again!

Thanks! :glomp: What size do you usually work with for your full figures? (you do digital, right? except it looks like your lines are done traditional.)

It was a little difficult to get the glowing effect. I couldn't mix the right color for the life of me (apparently green and yellow do NOT make bright green.)so I went and bought a shiny neon green paint. You can't tell it here, but the eyes shimmer slightly when light hits the painting just right.

If "rawr" means "I love you" in dinosaur, then "meow" means "f*** you" in cat.

Thanks! :highfive: you should read it!
