Full title: "Standing by the freeway where the headlight keep her company"

18"x20" (I think. It's small though...)
acryllic on canvas
one sitting
early august 2009

This was a line from a song I heard on the radio one day. I don't even like the song or the band, but that line was so dynamic to me when I heard it. This one is a exception to my normal paintings, which all have narratives associated with the various parts of the painting. This one is kinda simple that way. I hadn't painted in a while, and wanted to experiment with some things. My roommates were making fun of me for painting so many...um, women without clothes, so I also wanted to paint a woman WITH clothes just for them, haha!

There's a measure of loneliness in this painting that I like. Every just gone on a drive on the freeway (you city dwellers like me where the freeway runs through the middle of the city) just to feel like you're not alone and to clear your head? Yep. Did quite a bit of that this summer.

It remind me of the time I lived in Baltimore a little. The never-ending stream of cars really does hammer into you a sense of just how many people there are out there, and just how little most of them have to do with you. It sort of reminds us how special even our casual acquaintances are, merely because they aren't part of that seemingly infinite, faceless throng.

It's true! I love living in the city, every aspect of it, even though it can be a little impersonal sometimes.

I didn't like everything about it myself, but it was nice being near so many things to do. Comparatively, Salisbury is pretty boring. Still, that might not be a bad thing in itself. I didn't start writing for serious until I came back here. Never seemed to have time in Baltimore.

You can't see the stars in the city, though.

Oooo I love it. I find a great beauty and presence in the city lights, especially in the rain :)

It's never a miss to go in the middle of nowhere to see the stars though. I guess you appreciate them a whole lot more the less you see of them eh? :)

Pros and Cons, I suppose

sure you can, just not downtown! :D

I'm so glad you like it! :D You can see the stars in the suburbs in Boise, just not in the heart of downtown. Idaho is a very interesting state though--nature just seems to thrust herself in strangest places here, as if no matter how many cities we built and how vast they are, she will not be cast out fully. I love it here.

To me the tall buildings of a city are not imposing, they are protective. the same-ness of the suburbs, the predictibility of the streets and walkways...these things feel safe to me, not boring or tamed. The allyways and downtown are not dangrous, they are adventures waiting around every corner for me. (though I am smart and don't go down them, lol). Things are not planned, they are ordered. I just love the city. My redneck family hate that.

Oh wow, sounds like the cities in my dreams :D

I'm in Melbourne, the ominous glowing sky throughout the night is a little depressing. Be that as it may I do absolutely love walking the streets in the middle of the night (in a non dodgy way) :P

oooh, scary man walking around at night...lol. So you're THAT guy! Just kidding, :p. I think the biggest city I've really spent time in is Seattle. I went there for a visit not that long ago, and it was SO fun. You couldn't see much sky at night, but there was such energy in how busy and alive the city is. walking around after dark, i could feel the electricity of downtown Seattle's energy trembling in my skin--wonderful. I was also in New york for two days once, but I didn't see much of it.

Yeah, but not like you can on a clear night out in the country. The sky hardly even seems to have any black in it then. Have you ever seen the stars from a mountaintop?
