Description

Please see my scraps for details!

So, lacking the techical know-how and tools that would be needed, I wasn't able to drill the holes myself and all of that. I ordered it with the holes pre-drilled from Stellar Flutes, which can be found online. It was completely square, and almost white in color, with the block un-carved, except for the general shape and groove underneith. (The block is what produces the sound. That groove is, perhaps, the most important part of the whole flute. That and the square holes that the block sits on.)

It's tuned in a nice middle G, a very smokey, earthy key that's very pleasing to hear. Very gentle sounding. The wood that is used is Cedar. Maybe Red Cedar, but I'm not sure.

What I did:
The first thing was the hardest. I sanded it all round and tappered the end where the mouth was-- BY HAND! Using various grains of sandpaper. Toward the end a friend lent me some metal tools that helped it go faster, but those tools were also used by hand, not automatic. I also water-sealed the inside and stained the outside with mink oil, recomended by my dad, who is himself a craftsman.

That same friend who lent my his sanding tools helped me to carve the bird. No, it's NOT an actual bird- it's a wolf. "Bird" is the technical name for the block. It has a groove on the bottom that directs the air over the hole just right, producing sound. I did some of it with a hand saw, some with sandpaper, and then he had this fancy sandpaper tool that he wouldn't let me use, so I stood over him and directed him as he did it. He carves himself, so it was great and I'm very grateful!

Lastly, decorating. The fur is white rabbit fur that I've had since I was really young, maybe five or six. Near the block I've tied some glass beads, imitating turquoise, with black hemp. On the bottom of the flute, near the other peice of rabbit fur, I've woven red and white yarn in a fancy weave I found on the internet. I think that it was a more complicated form of the friendship weave, but I'n not sure.

Special thanks to dad, for all the guidance and input in this and other things, and the friend who lend me the tools and helped me to carve the wolf!

Osiyo Stoneflower, it is a lovely flute, I (try to, lol) make flute's myself, it's fun isnt it? I dont use any special tool's for making the hole's, what I do, is I heat up a nail in a fire (Ok, I use a blowtorch, but the same thing can be accomplished with a regular fire, like a candle, it will just take a lot longer) and use it to burn my hole's, then I wrap a piece of sandpaper on a small piece of wood (thin but long enough to do the job) and use that to clean up the burned hole's.
